Hey guys sorry I'm late, I didn't know three months passed. Sorry about that been really busy, here's part 6. :) Based on Vashti's descendant from king Nebuchadnezzar, who was responsible for the destruction of the first temple built by Solomon as well as her unhappy fate, the Mid-rash presents Vashti as wicked and vain. Since Vashti is ordered to appear before the king on the seventh day of the feast, the rabbis argued that Vashti enslaved Jewish women and forced them to work on the Sabbath. According to the Mid-rashic account, Vashti was a savvy politician, and the ladies' banquet that she held in parallel to Xerxes banquet, represented an astute political maneuver. Since the noble women of the kingdom would be present at her banquet, she would have control of a valuable group of hostages in case a coup d'état occurred during the king's feast. But due to her refusal of the king’s request, she was banished. The part where it said the king burned with anger, shows he had a bad temper, but not your average bad temper. It was mixed with some craziness. Xerxes was known for his fits of rage. One time he had a bridge built by 300 of his men. They were almost finished with it but a bad storm came from the sea and tore the bridge and damaged his ships and killed his men. So, in a fit of rage Xerxes ran out to the sea and started beating the ocean waves for destroying his bridge, ships and men. After that he killed the 300 men that built the bridge. So it’s a shocker Xerxes didn’t kill Vashti for her disobedience, he only banish her from the kingdom, never to return. After Vashti’s refusal a royal decree was issued, it was written in the laws of Persia and Media, which cannot be repealed. Vashti was never again to enter the presence of King Xerxes. It was then said that the king give her royal position to someone else who is better than she. 20Then when the king’s edict is proclaimed throughout all his vast realm, all the women will respect their husbands, from the least to the greatest.” Now this is where Esther comes on the scene. In chapter 2 of Esther it reads: 1After these things when the anger of King Ahasuerus had subsided, he remembered Vashti and what she had done and what had been decreed against her. As a side note according to Persian law once the king made a decree he could not change it even though he was the one that wrote it. At this time King Xerxes lost his battle to the Greeks. Continuing on 2Then the king’s attendants, who served him, said, “Let beautiful young virgins be sought for the king. 3“Let the king appoint overseers in all the provinces of his kingdom that they may gather every beautiful young virgin to the citadel of Susa, to the harem, into the custody of Hegai, the king’s eunuch, who is in charge of the women; and let their cosmetics be given them. 4“Then let the young lady who pleases the king be queen in place of Vashti.” And the matter pleased the king, and he did accordingly. Now there was at the citadel in Susa a Jew whose name was Mordecai, the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite, 6who had been taken into exile from Jerusalem with the captives who had been exiled with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had exiled. 7He was bringing up Hadassah, that is Esther, his uncle’s daughter, for she had no father or mother. Now the young lady was beautiful of form and face, and when her father and her mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter. Thanks for stopping by, you guys are awesome! until next time.
