Hey guys thanks for stopping by! Continuing on from last week: And the third woman, Delilah, which was his downfall was like that of death as the Bible states the wages of sin is death. And as it reads in Proverbs 5 and 3, for the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it. Now comes the end for the hero’s tragedy. But the last chapter in his life is what counts most. Starting in Judges 16, Samson went to Gaza, there he saw the prostitute and he went into her but later the people of Gaza found out Samson was there so they planned ambush him, all night at the city gate at they kept quiet, saying let us wait till the light of the morning then we will kill him. Somehow Samson found out and at midnight he arose and took hold of the doors of the gate of the city and the two posts and pulled them up, bar and all and put them on his shoulders and carry them to the top of the hill that is in front of Hebron. After this he loved the woman in the Valley of Sorek whose name was Delilah. And the Lords of the Philistines came up to her and said to her, seduce him and see where his great strength lies and by what means we may overpower him that we may find him to humble him. And we will each give you 1,100 pieces of silver. Let’s stick a pen there, for the Philistines to offer Delilah 1,100 shekels of silver each shows you how much they wanted Samson dead. So, let’s break down how much 1,100 shekels of silver is. The law of Moses said that one half shekel of silver could ransom the soul of a man. Shekels were weighted money. It was a standard financial transaction. The shekel weight is 11.46 g of silver. Two and one half shekels would equal 1 ounce. Micah, a priest, was paid 10 shekels for a year of labor. Half of the shekel bought the soul of a man. Delilah altogether was offered 5,500 shekels from the five Lords of the Philistines. To let you know how much it was, she could buy an army of 11,000 men. The high position of a priest was paid 10 shekels for a year of labor. This sum offered to Delilah amounted to 550 years of work, that’s quite a lump sum. In US dollars 5,500 shekels amounts to $1,519.75 that’s a lot of money back then, even now that’s still a lot of money. Thanks guys for stopping by and liking my posts, you guys are AWESOME!!! Until next time. |
